Two specific challenges are emerging. First, known crawlers—like those from search engines—often consume significant resources without sending traffic back. Website owners need authenticated crawler identification, such as HTTP message signatures, to decide whether to allow them.

Second, new types of clients—AI agents, headless browsers, and automated tools—do not behave like traditional web browsers. They bypass client-side detection entirely, making private rate limiting and behavioral analysis at the server level essential.

“The web protection systems we build today must accommodate a future where ‘bot vs. human’ is not the important data point,” said Chen. “They must detect automation when it matters, but also recognize that some automation is welcome.”

For website owners, this means investing in server-side security analytics that track intent, session patterns, and deviation from baseline behavior—rather than relying on client-side cues.
